BOTOX® Cosmetic Vs. Dermal Fillers

Cosmetic injectables have soared in popularity over the years. Two of the most frequently requested options at our practice, BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM®, offer numerous benefits for both women and men who are looking to minimize signs of age and other common concerns that affect facial aesthetics. While both treatments can be very effective for facial rejuvenation, there are some essential differences between them that can make one option a more suitable choice than the other, depending on the specific concerns being addressed.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is what’s known as a neurotoxin-based injectable. The solution utilized in the injections is composed of a purified form of botulinum toxin, and is able to temporarily diminish signs of wrinkles and creases by preventing muscles in the treatment area from contracting. BOTOX® Cosmetic is often a good option for reducing wrinkles and lines that form at the edges of the eyes (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows, and across the forehead. Results from BOTOX® Cosmetic usually last about three to four months before fading; however, occasional “touch-up” injections can often keep the effects going for longer periods.

A dermal filler such as JUVÉDERM® also involves the careful placement of an injectable solution to rejuvenate one’s facial appearance; however, the solution is very different from BOTOX® Cosmetic. Instead of a neurotoxin, JUVÉDERM® is primarily comprised of a hyaluronic acid-based ingredient, which is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. This formulation can be ideal for “filling in” deep wrinkles and fine lines, as well as for adding volume to particular facial features such as the lips and cheeks. The effects of JUVÉDERM® are known to be very long-lasting—some products in the JUVÉDERM® line can last up to a year or even longer for some patients.

Since these treatments are ultimately quite distinct from each other in several ways, the best option for each patient is dependent on individual goals, the areas that will be targeted for treatment, and the precise skin conditions that one is looking to improve. During your consultation with Dr. Wally Zollman, he will examine your skin and discuss your goals with you. Dr. Zollman can recommend the ideal injectable option for your needs and develop a customized treatment plan that is meticulously designed to provide you with effective, natural-looking rejuvenation.
