Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck: Which Is Right for Me?

Even individuals who have maintained an excellent diet and exercise routine for many years can be affected by a noticeable collection of excess fat and inelastic skin in the midsection. This can be due to a number of different issues, including pregnancy, weight fluctuations over time, and even just the natural process of aging. For those considering plastic surgery to provide effective body contouring in the abdomen and surrounding areas, liposuction and tummy tuck surgery are two of the most popular methods to achieve this goal. With that in mind, these treatments are distinct in certain ways, which can make one a more desirable option than the other based on each patient’s unique needs and expectations.

Liposuction is more often recommended for patients whose concerns are primarily caused by isolated pockets of excess fat. It is common for these stubborn fat pockets to develop in the abdominal area, flanks, and lower back. Liposuction typically requires very small incisions, allowing for the extraction of excess fat cells through long, thin tubes called cannulas. This can ultimately lead to improved contours in these areas while minimizing the appearance of residual scars. If the aesthetic concerns in the abdomen are predominantly caused by a buildup of excess, inelastic skin rather than fat, liposuction alone will not be enough to resolve the issue. In those cases, either tummy tuck surgery or a combination of tummy tuck and liposuction can be considered.

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is designed to remove excess abdominal skin and tighten the underlying muscles. The remaining tissue is then pulled taut to reduce the appearance of loose skin and give the abdomen a flatter contour and a firmer look. A full tummy tuck surgery requires an incision extending from hip-to-hip. Dr. Wally Zollman can apply advanced surgical techniques to minimize residual scarring as much as possible, and the scar should be easily concealable under clothing and even certain types of bathing attire. Some patients may be affected by both excess fat and excess skin/loose muscles in the abdomen, and may, therefore, benefit from tummy tuck surgery combined with liposuction in this area.

When you meet with Dr. Zollman for a consultation, he will perform a thorough evaluation of the body regions you would like to address and talk with you about your options. During this initial meeting, Dr. Zollman can determine whether liposuction, tummy tuck surgery, or both of these treatments will be necessary to meet your expectations. Dr. Zollman customizes all procedures to each patient’s individual needs to create a treatment plan that can effectively provide the desired results.
